These are some samples of xfig artwork I have produced to support my aerospace writing activity over the last three years. Some artwork has been converted from Framemaker art I produced during the early nineties. The F-111C in the header was produced by taking an original USAF F-111A 3 View drawing, scanning it into a TIFF bitmap, converting the bitmap into EPS format using Streamline on a PowerMac, and then using the pstoedit tool under FreeBSD to convert the EPS into FIG. A couple of hours of manual editing with xfig was required to clean it up, put in required modifications, and add in the colours. The camouflage is authentic and taken off a recent photo from RAAF Amberley. The JDAM bomb is an older drawing, scaled to size, and rotated where appropriate.

This Su-37 is depicted in the colours of the PLA-AF (Red China). The artwork uses authentic PLA-AF camouflage as currently carried by the Su-27SK in operational service.
The primary armament of the Flanker is the Vympel R-73 / AA-11 Archer missile and the Vympel R-77 Adder or Amraamski. These diagrams are the most geometrically accurate of their kind published in a Western journal to date, and are based on published photographs.
This diagram was produced to support a series of features on 4th generation missiles, and compares the engagement envelopes of the Flanker with Archer against the Hornet with Sidewinder. Not a pretty sight if you are a Hornet driver ! The Flanker and Hornet use existing artwork which was merged and scaled down to make up the diagram.
This diagram was produced to support a series of features on possible RAAF fighter replacements for the Hornet. This is the cure for a neighbourhood full of Flankers 8-) The Flanker diagram was rotated and scaled, as was the Raptor.
The F-22A Raptor, based on a Lockheed drawing of the production aircraft.
A mainstay of the former Soviet battlefield IADS was the ZRK Kub known by the NATO reporting name of SA-6B Gainful. This is the weapon which caused heavy losses to the Israelis in 1973. The diagram includes a TELAR and the Straight Flush fire control radar. This diagram was originally produced in Framemaker by myself in 1993, and recently converted into xfig using pstoedit.
The Rafael Python 4 dogfight missile, one of the most lethal air superiority weapons deployed in recent times. The artwork is based upon manufacturer's photographs.
An F/RF-111C AUP with an array of in service and potential future weapons. Definitely something to avoid getting into a fight with ! This diagram, like the one at the top of the page, was created by merging various bits of artwork. A good "demo" piece.
BAe ALARM Anti-Radiation missile attack modes, produced for a technical profile written about this impressive missile. The radar image is based on a scanned Clam Shell picture from a Russian glossie !
This superb F-23 drawing was produced by Hsin-Ho Wu at UFL, in AutoCAD. He graciously provided me with Postscript, which I converted into xfig, and then added in the Camouflage. This item is now posted at a number of web pages.
Profiles of the TSR.2 in would be RAF and RAAF squadron colours. The TSR.2 was sadly killed by inept politicians, a move which devastated the UK aerospace industry. Camouflage was copied off a Tornado IDS GR.1 photograph.
