The Unit Menu can help show your drawing in dimensions that are easy to manipulate with Xfig. Bring up the Unit Menu by selecting Edit->Set units. One particularly thorny problem we have is trying to get the dimension lines to work right with a large drawing. Unlike schematics, these drawings are large, but not that detailed. For instance, here is the setting we use when drawing a large structure (7 feet tall):



Here is what the automatically generated dimension line looks like with these settings:



We can use inches, then, but the line isn't so long that the endpoints and text are too small to see. For more information, see the manual page.
